SOURCENEXT adopts SORACOM global connectivity for POCKETALK ultra compact translator

POCKETALK to feature SORACOM Air global cellular connectivity beginning December 2017

Tokyo — SORACOM and SOURCENEXT announced today that when the breakthrough POCKETALK personal translation device is released in December 2017, it will be available with SORACOM Air service to allow convenient cellular connectivity in all supported countries without changing SIMs or settings.

POCKETALK serves as a palm-sized personal interpreter, fluent in over 50 languages and ready to serve travelers, hosts, businesspeople and students in 61 countries around the world. POCKETALK uses cloud technology to process voice input with incredibly low latency for near-instant speech recognition, translation, speech synthesis, and even character conversion well beyond the capability of a conventional self-contained translation device.

This advanced IoT communication tool will be offered with a dedicated global SIM or as a modular unit with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and optional cellular connectivity. In both cases, cellular connectivity will make use of SORACOM’s recently-announced Plan01s, which allows developers and manufacturers to set SIMs to a zero-cost standby state.

Standby state allows devices to access cellular connectivity during factory testing and inspection during production without incurring cost during storage and shipping. In combination with global service, web console, and APIs for bulk management of devices and connectivity, this makes SORACOM Air an ideal solution for IoT devices that will be manufactured in one region for distribution around the world.

POCKETALK will be available in Japan beginning December 14, 2017, and SOURCENEXT is currently accepting pre-orders.
