Soracom IoT Communication Platform Adds Native Support for Sigfox

Users can now manage Sigfox LPWA deployments and access advanced cloud-native capability.

San Francisco, CA — Today at the inaugural Mobile World Congress Americas, Soracom, Inc., the leading platform provider of cloud-native connectivity built specifically for the requirements of the Internet of Things, announced native platform support in the United States for Sigfox’s market-leading LPWA (Low Power Wide Area) connectivity.

Soracom’s IoT connectivity platform delivers pay-as-you go, over-the-air service designed specifically for IoT development. Users also get access to a wide range of cloud-native capabilities tailored for IoT use cases, including data management and visualization, packet inspection, and adapters for direct connection to leading clouds such as Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft Azure

The addition of Sigfox support expands the Soracom platform in the US to encompass a wide range of new IoT use cases. Sigfox offers developers the opportunity to reduce connectivity cost and dramatically extend battery life for IoT devices while allowing connection over distances of miles or more. Sigfox can also be combined with high-bandwidth connectivity options such as cellular or WiFi in a blended deployment to support a broad set of IoT use cases. Sigfox is currently deployed in 32 countries worldwide, with coverage already available in most major US cities.

Soracom customers will be able to use the SORACOM Air web console and APIs to operate and manage devices connected with Sigfox. Blended cellular/LPWA deployments can now apply a single cloud-side architecture to simplify deployment, commissioning, and ongoing support of in-field devices. Importantly, Sigfox deployments can now take advantage of the tools available on the Soracom platform, including device management, data transmission reduction, cloud service integration, data visualization, packet inspection, and more.

Soracom will also begin offering the Sea Slug Labs Wisol breakout (WSSFM10R2) for direct purchase from the Soracom User Console. This Arduino-compatible module is easy to program using AT commands, compatible with Sigfox in the US, and helps developers quickly prototype a Sigfox based device.

“Adding Sigfox global LPWAN service to Soracom cellular connectivity provides tremendous value to customers looking for multiple-mode deployments,” said Davide Pacchini, director Global Alliances at Sigfox. “This partnership will extend Sigfox’s market leading story of low cost, low energy and ubiquitous service with Soracom’s cellular connectivity to provide dual-mode capability and grow the market of use cases for developers and customers.”

”We are delighted to welcome Sigfox to the Soracom platform as an important complementary connectivity partner,” said CJ Boguszewski, Soracom G2M lead for the Americas. “Expanding the range of use cases supported over-the-air on Sigfox’s architecture is crucial to unlocking the value in both LPWA and cellular environments. From simple cases like water metering or fuel tank level monitoring to more complicated blended deployments using Sigfox and two-way devices and actuators in the Smart Building, Soracom is thrilled to give developers a single cloud-side architecture to master the connectivity puzzle.”

For those who would like a hands-on opportunity to try this new service, Soracom and Sigfox will be offering workshops in the East Bay on September 15th. For details and registration, visit https://www.meetup.com/sv-iot/
