Soracom Announces New Cellular Rate Plan for Low-data IoT Devices

New Low Data Volume plan reduces cost of operating connected devices with lower data needs

SANTA CLARA – Soracom Inc., provider of the leading cloud-native communication platform for the Internet of Things, today announced a new rate plan designed specifically for devices that require only small amounts of data.

Speaking in a keynote on the IoT Architecture track at Internet of Things World 2017, Soracom founder and CEO Ken Tamagawa announced the immediate availability of a new rate plan for cellular connectivity addressing the needs of IoT developers who work with relatively small amounts of data each month:

“We’ve always been committed to a contract-free, pay-as-you-go model,” Tamagawa said. “It’s the right way to connect IoT devices. This new pricing reduces fixed cost even further for anyone using small amounts of data, so you can keep a device alive and get full access to the cloud at a very low cost.”

The new pricing is available immediately and applies to Soracom’s “SORACOM Air” cellular connectivity service for IoT. Under the current plan, cellular connectivity is available for $0.06 USD/day with data metered at a rate of $0.08 USD/MB (lower rates available at higher volume). Under the new Low Data Volume plan, connectivity is billed at a flat $0.40 USD/month, with data metered at a rate of $0.50 USD/MB.

“The typical fixed cost for connectivity can be a challenge for developers,” said CJ Boguszewski, Soracom G2M lead for the Americas. “Especially in cases like asset tracking or low-frequency remote monitoring, it can cost more to keep a connection alive than it does to transfer data. This new plan makes it easier for key IoT use cases to deliver ROI much more quickly.”

The SORACOM Air SIM for cellular IoT/M2M connectivity operates in 120 countries worldwide and comes with Soracom’s robust network management console and 150+ APIs. SORACOM SIM cards are available on Amazon.com and can now also be purchased directly from the Soracom user console. Connection on any plan provides access to Soracom’s full suite of cloud services for improved device performance, reduced memory, data and power usage, and secure integration with leading cloud services.
